Liberia, and its capital city Monrovia, hasn’t been a big name in tourism over the past several decades. Thanks to beautiful, natural landscapes and enterprising entrepreneurs, though, the country is starting to make a name for itself among international travelers.
“Monrovia is a beautiful city in a very dramatic natural setting -… with a rocky peninsula and the ocean on one side, and a mangrove marsh on the other. There are beaches outside of town that are excellent,” said John Sheehy, founder of a local business organization that has created unique, local maps for tourists visiting the city.
The coastal setting of Monrovia and close proximity to an international airport (Roberts International) can make it an ideal location for either pleasure or business. If you are looking for luxury villas in or near Monrovia, what should you expect? Here are three tips.
1. Beach Resorts
One of Liberia’s strongest assets is its large, fairly empty beaches. Far from having to fight for umbrella space, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean. Tourism in the country is on the rise, but still a relatively small part of the economy, so finding a resort that has a restaurant is a good idea so that you have multiple options for evening plans. You’ll be close to the action of the city, without being right in the middle of it. In the city, you’ll be able to check out attractions such as the Waterside Market.
2. Ask About Electricity
It’s worth noting that infrastructure in the country is still in development, and access to electricity in some parts is intermittent. You’ll want to look for holiday villas that have consistent access to an electrical grid, or provide their own generator. This will be especially important if you are traveling to Monrovia for business reasons, since you will likely need stable and consistent access to power for computers and presentations.
3. Help With Transportation is a Plus
Since there is no public transport in Monrovia, finding a luxury villa that provides transportation to commonly visited locations like the downtown area and the airport are a plus. Taxis are also easily available, and relatively cheap. Besides the many sights the city has to offer, there are many tourist attractions a quick drive away as well. Among them, the “Monkey Islands,” located about an hour and a half outside the city, come highly recommended. These six islands are home to multiple chimpanzee groups that were left there after New York Blood center experiments ended in the 1970s.
